This option presents an alternative for young women between 16 and 20 years of age who are completing undergraduate or postgraduate coursework, and allows them to pay for their room and board by assuming responsibilities within the residence hall.
This kind of housing arrangement is popular in Nordic countries as well as in the United States. In Barcelona there are three facilities of this kind, all located close to the university area, in residencies associated with Opus Dei, an institution belonging to the Catholic Church.
The work involved is carried out in the residency. Participants may distribute their work shifts throughout the seven days of the week, working 14 or 27 hours a week; the latter option covers 100% of the accommodation fee. The work consists of handling food services, laundry, etc. Participants work with specialised personnel and may individually arrange their working schedules to be compatible with their academic obligations. The salary is proportional to the working hours as stipulated in the agreement. Earnings from this contract will be reflected in the Social Security system.
