Sophia Aguirre, professor of Economics at the Catholic University (Washington, DC), participated in the International Congress on Family and Society that was held at the UIC in May 2008. She was one of the participants in the documentary Demographic Winter: The Decline of the Human Family, which was screened at the Congress for the first time in Europe. The Bishop Prelate of Opus Dei read the final paper at the International Congress on Family and Society. The Congress was then officially closed by UIC Rector Dr. Josep Argemí. Over a period of three days, more than 50 world-renowned experts participated in the discussions and debates.

Spain earmarks 0.7% of its GDP for the family, a figure that places it behind all the other countries in the European Union, according to Raul Sánchez, the director of the International Congress on Family and Society, which is organized by the UIC and was inaugurated on Wednesday afternoon, 14 May 2008, International Family Day.
The Congress will be the main event of the UIC's 10th anniversary celebrations and will include an exclusive screening at noon on Thursday, 15 May, of the documentary Demographic Winter: The Decline of the Human Family, in which international experts analyse worldwide demographic data.
