Craniomandibular Dysfunction

Evaluative and therapeutical procedures applied to craniomandibular dysfunction

In recent years there has been a great deal of research studies published in relation to temporomandibular pathology from a variety of different angles: biomechanical; image evaluation techniques; studies in relation to the application of occlusal splints; surgery, and others. However, there are still many interesting areas that have yet to be evaluated for this type of pathology from a multidisciplinary perspective (odontological, physiotherapy, psychological).

In addition, within the section dedicated more specifically to physiotherapy, it is possible to evaluate the use and effectiveness of some of the therapeutic techniques that are being used in standard therapy as these specific studies are not well recorded in the literature for this area.

The interdisciplinary approach also allows us to evaluate the effectiveness of the techniques as a whole, based on the experience of the members that make up the team, a useful element if we consider the lack of multidisciplinary studies on this subject.

Research projects:

  • Project 1: Stabilometric study of patients with craniomandibular dysfunction.
A transversal study is carried out for the purpose of establishing an association between craniomandibular dysfunction and changes in the stabilometric register, as well as between the occlusal factor (occlusal modifications created in the patient through intraoral elements) and modifications in these readings. The study group will be comprised of patients diagnosed with craniomandibular dysfunction and the control group will be made up of individuals who do not suffer from this disorder.
